UV Lamps for Vitamin D
Vitamin D synthesis requires ultraviolet-B in a narrow wavelength window (290–315 nm, with peak activity around 297 nm). Most consumer "sun lamps" and almost all "SAD lamps" emit no meaningful UVB and produce zero vitamin D. Only specific medical-grade or tanning-industry UVB sources do the job.
The wavelength requirement
- UVA (315–400 nm) — most tanning beds emit primarily UVA. Produces a tan, ages skin, does NOT produce vitamin D.
- UVB (280–315 nm) — the vitamin D-synthesising band. Only UVB in the 290–315 nm range converts 7-dehydrocholesterol to previtamin D3.
- Narrowband UVB (311–313 nm) — used in dermatology for psoriasis and vitiligo; produces vitamin D as a side effect but is not marketed for that purpose.
- Full-spectrum "sun lamps" and SAD lamps — these use visible-white LED light around 10,000 lux; no UVB, no vitamin D. They treat seasonal affective disorder by circadian entrainment, not by making vitamin D.
Consumer options that do produce vitamin D
- Medical UVB units (Sperti, Solarc RMR-1600 series) — engineered to emit 290–315 nm. Sessions of a few minutes, 3× per week, can raise 25(OH)D similarly to oral supplementation. FDA-registered but not covered by insurance for vitamin D indication.
- Tanning beds — vary hugely. Some newer beds include UVB tubes; older/most beds are UVA-dominant. Deliberate tanning-bed use for vitamin D is not recommended by any professional dermatology body because of melanoma risk.
- Reptile UVB lamps (10.0 or 12% UVB fluorescents designed for chameleons and lizards) — do produce UVB and have been used off-label for vitamin D. Not FDA-cleared for human use; exposure control is up to you; skin cancer risk of chronic use is unstudied.
When lamps actually make sense
- Severe fat malabsorption — cystic fibrosis, short-bowel, post-bariatric — where oral cholecalciferol fails despite high doses.
- Established rickets or osteomalacia when supplementation has failed.
- Concurrent psoriasis or vitiligo where narrowband UVB is already being used therapeutically.
For everyone else — supplements win
An OTC cholecalciferol capsule is cheaper, safer, and more precise than any UV device. UVB carries carcinogenic risk (basal cell, squamous cell, and — with UVA — melanoma), needs eye protection, and requires uncovered skin at a specific distance for measured minutes. For 95%+ of people asking about "vitamin D lamps," the correct answer is: don't buy the lamp, buy the supplement.
