UV Lamps for Vitamin D

Vitamin D synthesis requires ultraviolet-B in a narrow wavelength window (290–315 nm, with peak activity around 297 nm). Most consumer "sun lamps" and almost all "SAD lamps" emit no meaningful UVB and produce zero vitamin D. Only specific medical-grade or tanning-industry UVB sources do the job.

An OTC cholecalciferol capsule is cheaper, safer, and more precise than any UV device. UVB carries carcinogenic risk (basal cell, squamous cell, and — with UVA — melanoma), needs eye protection, and requires uncovered skin at a specific distance for measured minutes.
