Vitamin D and Clothing Coverage
Vitamin D synthesis depends on the surface area of skin exposed to UVB. What you wear when outside — long sleeves, shorts, hat, hijab, gown, veil — is one of the largest modifiable determinants of how much vitamin D you make. Coverage practices driven by climate, occupation, culture, or religion all affect deficiency risk.
Body surface area estimates
- Face + hands — ~5–8% of body surface area (BSA).
- Face + hands + forearms — ~10–12% BSA.
- Face + hands + arms + legs (shorts and short-sleeve) — ~35–40% BSA.
- Swimwear — ~80–90% BSA exposed.
- Full body coverage (long clothing + hijab or full-face covering) — 0–5% BSA.
Vitamin D synthesis is roughly proportional to exposed BSA. Doubling exposed skin area roughly doubles synthesis for the same duration and UV intensity.
UPF fabric ratings
Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) rates a fabric's ability to block UV. Tightly woven dark fabrics can achieve UPF 50+ (blocks 98% of UV). A typical white cotton T-shirt is ~UPF 7 — blocks 85% of UV. Wet or stretched fabric offers less protection. UPF is a helpful skin-cancer protection measure — but it's also a vitamin D-blocking measure. Purpose-built sun-protection clothing is very effective at both.
Cultural and religious dress
Full-body coverage in dress (hijab, niqab, burqa, some traditional Orthodox or Amish styles) is associated with high rates of vitamin D deficiency, particularly when combined with dark skin and limited outdoor time. Studies from Saudi Arabia, UAE, Turkey, and Pakistan document deficiency in 60–90% of adult women in veiled populations. Supplementation is the practical answer — sun exposure requires compromising practices most such women have chosen for reasons unrelated to vitamin D.
Occupational coverage
Outdoor workers you'd expect to be sun-replete (construction, farming, roofing) often are — but not always. Modern workwear includes UPF-rated long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats, and full-length trousers as heat protection. Farmers in Australia and the American Southwest have been observed to be vitamin D deficient despite spending 8+ hours outdoors daily, because their protective clothing blocks UVB effectively.
Face-only exposure
Face + hands alone (typical winter dress in temperate climates) produces roughly 10–20% of the vitamin D that swimwear-level exposure produces at the same UV intensity. In winter, face-only exposure at high latitudes is essentially symbolic — the sun angle prevents synthesis regardless of BSA.
Practical guide
- Fully-covered dress or heavy UPF workwear year-round — supplement 1,000–2,000 IU/day cholecalciferol. Test 25(OH)D.
- Standard summer casual (short sleeves, long trousers) — 15–30 minutes midday sun several times per week meets most needs May–August in temperate zones.
- Beach-style exposure (swimwear, adequate arms/legs) — 5–15 minutes midday is sufficient in summer; stop before pinkening.
- Winter (any coverage) — sun angle is limiting; supplement regardless.
- Never seek sunburn to boost vitamin D — you can't accelerate synthesis by burning, and cancer risk climbs.
