Vitamin D and Tanning Beds
Tanning-bed manufacturers have long marketed vitamin D synthesis as a benefit. It isn't. Dermatology bodies worldwide — American Academy of Dermatology, WHO IARC (classifies tanning devices as Group 1 carcinogens), Cancer Council Australia — reject tanning-bed use as a vitamin D strategy. Melanoma risk is the deciding factor.
Do tanning beds produce vitamin D?
Some do, some don't. Older tanning beds emitted mostly UVA (315–400 nm), which produces a tan but not vitamin D. Newer beds may include UVB tubes and produce cholecalciferol synthesis. Consumers rarely know which they're using; commercial beds vary widely.
The melanoma math
Meta-analyses find tanning-bed use before age 35 raises melanoma risk by ~75% per lifetime use. First-use before age 25 is worse. Even brief use — one session per year for a "vitamin D boost" — produces measurable DNA damage. The benefit ceiling (a 10–20 ng/mL rise in 25(OH)D) is achieved cheaper and safer with a $5 bottle of cholecalciferol.
Legal restrictions
Brazil banned tanning beds in 2009. Australia banned commercial tanning bed use in 2015. Many US states restrict under-18 use. UK and EU regulations tightened after 2010. The direction of policy is clear: recognition that tanning beds are unsafe.
Practical guidance
Don't use tanning beds for vitamin D. Ever. If you want a tan for cosmetic reasons, understand the melanoma cost. If you want vitamin D, take a cholecalciferol capsule. It's cheaper, safer, and more precise.
