Any job that keeps you indoors during UVB hours — night shifts, office work, healthcare clinical shifts, mining, professional driving, factory work — sets you up for vitamin D deficiency. Studies of nurses, night-shift factory workers, and coal miners consistently find 40–70% of workers deficient regardless of season.
Why the day/night schedule matters
UVB reaches the ground in usable intensity only when the sun is more than about 35° above the horizon — roughly 10 AM to 2 PM at temperate latitudes. Sleep during those hours is more than an inconvenience; it removes the only window in which your skin can synthesise vitamin D. Weekend catch-up sun exposure helps but doesn't fully compensate over a 5-day/2-day pattern.

- Take with a fat-containing meal — for shift workers this may be your "dinner" at an unconventional hour.
- Sun exposure on days off helps but is not sufficient — plan on year-round supplementation.
