Vitamin D and Caffeine
Coffee and caffeine don't meaningfully affect vitamin D absorption. The historical concern was about caffeine and calcium — heavy chronic caffeine intake modestly increases urinary calcium loss, which matters for bone health. Vitamin D itself is fat-soluble and largely independent of caffeine intake.
The calcium-caffeine story
Caffeine at high chronic doses (> 400 mg/day, 4+ cups of coffee) modestly increases urinary calcium excretion — about 4–6 mg extra per 100 mg caffeine. Real-world impact on bone density is small in adults with adequate calcium intake (~1,000 mg/day). Adding milk to coffee/tea offsets the loss. Bone-health concerns primarily affect heavy caffeine users with low dietary calcium.
Vitamin D absorption and caffeine
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble molecule absorbed with dietary fat via bile- salt-dependent mixed micelles. Caffeine doesn't participate in this pathway and doesn't reduce vitamin D absorption. Taking a vitamin D capsule with or near coffee has no meaningful effect on 25(OH)D response.
One older-adult concern
One older study (Rapuri 2007) reported that older women with a specific vitamin D receptor (VDR) polymorphism had modestly accelerated bone loss with high caffeine intake. Later research has not consistently replicated this. The overall bone-density impact of habitual coffee drinking in adults is small.
Practical guide
- Take your vitamin D supplement with your usual meal — coffee timing doesn't matter.
- If you drink > 4 cups coffee/day, ensure adequate calcium (~1,000 mg/day) from food or supplement.
- Milk in coffee provides useful calcium and vitamin D (fortified milk).
- Bone-density concerns are age and sex specific — DEXA over 65, earlier if postmenopausal with risk factors.
